'Explosion plan' UK man in court
A British citizen has appeared in court charged with conspiring to cause an explosion with intent to endanger life.
Salahuddin Amin, 29, was arrested in Heathrow Airport after arriving on a British Airways flight from Pakistan.
Mr Amin, from Luton in Beds, appeared before Bow Street magistrates in central London on Monday, and was remanded in custody until 21 February.
His lawyer issued a statement on Mr Amin's behalf in which he claimed to have suffered in jail.
'Despicable conditions'
In the statement Mr Amin said: "In the name of God, the most merciful and gracious, I, Salahuddin Amin, was born in the UK and I am a British citizen with all my family resident in the UK.
"On April 2 2004 I surrendered myself to the authorities in Pakistan and was detained in the most despicable conditions for over 10 months.
"Throughout my detention I was tortured mentally and physically and subjected to interrogation by British, American and Pakistani intelligence authorities."
Mr Amin was charged under the 1883 Explosive Substances Act.
He is accused of unlawfully and maliciously conspiring with others to cause, by an explosive substance, an explosion of a nature likely to endanger life or cause serious damage to property, between 1 October 2003 and 31 March 2004.
