Verily, Allâh enjoins Justice and Correctness, and helping kith and kin and forbids lewd acts and all kinds of evil deed and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed. (An-Nahl: 90)

Muslim Community Liaison Unit

Introduction

The last few years have seen an exponential rise in the number of Islamophobic hate crimes across the country. Negative media portrayals and a growing atmosphere of prejudice against Islam have left Muslim communities stigmatised and ever fearful of backlash.

Luton Muslims recognises the effects of hate crimes and Islamophobic victimisation within society. Negative attitudes and prejudices lead to harassment and discrimination. In light of this Luton Muslims proposes that the Muslim Community work towards establishing a unit dedicated to tackling these concerns.

Muslim Community Liaisons Unit (MCLU)

The work of the MCLU will seek to present an opportunity for Muslims to promote the safety of their community. The scheme can only really work if the people, who are most affected, local residents, are given the opportunity to steer the safety and transformation of their community.  A community-led scheme fosters self-help and reduces dependency and therefore is the basis for confident, thriving and active communities.

This should serve as an opportunity for anyone within the community who feels they have been the victims of a hate crime or incident to report this with ease.  Where police activity has lead to unfair arrest and detainment measures must be in place to support an effective campaign to ensure the release of such individuals.

The MCLU should be dedicated to eliminating all forms of discrimination and intolerance against Muslims, countering the negative attitudes and prejudices that lead to discrimination and harassment of Muslims residing in Luton.  In order to practically achieve this goal the MCLU will undertake the following steps:

§         Provide direct links to local groups and organisations further a field that can provide support or information to people experiencing discrimination.

§         Work in partnership with other agencies to eliminate harassment and hate crimes against Muslims by taking preventative measures, educating and informing where appropriate and taking practical steps when injustices occur.

§         Aim to liaise with the police, local government, Luton Mosques and other agencies to combat the factors which lead to hate crimes, unfair arrest and detainment.

MCLU proposes a range of measures to improve the safety of Muslim residents in Luton and support victims of hate crime and discrimination, enabling them to make better use of legal protection and other sanctions and services available to increase their safety.
